I have been wondering, Aside from  Microsoft Excel, what other program for XLS file can be used to open one?

There are some alternate software that can open and manipulate xls files like Microsoft office excel. It’s very amazing. Download kingsoft spreadsheet from http://www.kingsoftstore.com/office/free-excel . It works fine. You may try https://www.guidingtech.com/10167/open-word-excel-doc-docx-xlsx-without-ms-office-installed/ too. Download free software to open xls files without Microsoft excel program if you are feeling problem with it.

Any other program I can use to open XLS file?

 

Basically, xls extension is Excel Microsoft Office Open XML format spreadsheet file. The best program to open/create or modify them is Microsoft Excel but you can also use different secondary programs for such file types. You can use PlanMaker or Open Office Calc for the same purpose. You can check them at this link: http://www.softmaker.com/en/softmaker-office-windows-planmaker.

An XLS file (*.xls) is a file format used by Microsoft Office Excel for versions 97 until 2003 for its worksheet file. Later versions of Microsoft Office Excel from version 2007 onwards save spreadsheet files in the XLSX format by default (*.xlsx). XLS files store data in tables of rows and columns supporting formatted text, charts, images, and more.

Macro-enabled Microsoft Office Excel files use the XLSM file extension (*.xlsm). XLS files can be opened with any version of Microsoft Office Excel. If you don’t have Microsoft Office Excel on your computer, an application called Microsoft Excel Viewer allows you to open Excel files, print, and copy data from them. Alternatively, XLS files can be opened and edited by OpenOffice Calc and Kingsoft Spreadsheets.

XLS files can also be opened with the Google Chrome web browser using the extension called Office Editing for Docs, Sheets & Slides. If you have a Google account, you can also open XLS files with Google Sheets by uploading the file in Google Drive.
