Abrupt shut down: Is the motherboard collapsed?

Hi all

I just installed an OS last night and completed the installation successfully. But, then unknowingly, my PC got shut down. It didn’t make any beep, prompt or any message. When I restarted the PC, a red wave sparked out of the button for once. The fan inside PC worked fine for a second. I have also checked power supply for any defect. Can anyone tell me that if the motherboard is finished?

Did it hang and you restarted it and it never did or was it a proper shut down?

You said that the fan and the red button light worked for a second. This means that there is something wrong with one of your PC component. Start the system checkup by doing the following things.

  1. Pull out the RAM first and then try to run the PC. If it beeps then it means that it’s the RAM that is causing the issue. If it still causes the error, move to next step.
  2. Replace the RAM back and pull out any extra component attached to motherboard, any PCI express device, a sound card or a graphics card. Then start. If it starts then it’s one of your devices that are causing the issue. Replace the devices back one by one to check. If the result is same, proceed to next step.
  3. Remove other PC components one by one. Now all that left is you’re DVD Drive and the Hard disk. Remove them and then try to power on the PC.
  4. At last if still the problem persists, then remove your motherboard from the casing. Put it on a card board and just plug the 24pin and 4pin connector from power supply to your motherboard. Don't connect or plug anything else except for the CPU that is still at its place. If it runs then it’s surely one of your PC components that you need to check for yourself. But if it still causing the same issue then I am afraid that it must be either your PSU or motherboard.

Sometimes the PSU don't give the required amount of power to start up the motherboard and components. So as a safety measure, motherboard doesn’t start in order to prevent any further damage to any component. Do try to replace your PSU too.

After everything you did as I said then it is time to take your computer to the Hardware vendor and ask for its help.

There is a nice way to detect either a motherboard is finished or not.

First of all remove your ram from your CPU but be sure that pc is switched off. if it is not switched off then it just blown everything. So you have to switched it off and turn off your ram from your CPU slot. And then again start your pc,if get a beep sound like(ti… ti… ti) that is trice time beep from your CPU then you will sure that motherboard is okay. Then you can check the power supply by a tester,if power supply also ok,then definitely the problem of your OS. Recommendation is to setup with a new OS,If you detect without thrice time beep then definitely you have lost your motherboard 🙂

I did just what you said. I removed the parts one by one and turned on the computer to check what is wrong. After checking, I think the problem is with the RAM. Because it beeped after I pulled it out. Atleast my motherboard is okay. I just have to replace my RAM.
