Hi there.
I'm having issues with my desktop network icon. I can't find it anywhere and it isn't on my desktop.
I am aware that each version of Microsoft Windows has a different name for network icon, so could you please explain how to  fix this problem for every Windows.

It seems that the Desktop icon option is unchecked or you have installed a new OS. With the new OS, all user defined settings are made to default and you have to do them again. I am supposing that you are using windows xp so do the following steps in order to solve your issue.
-
Right click anywhere on the desktop (not on the taskbar or on the start menu).

Choose Display Properties from the list.

Select the Display tab in the next opened window.

Check the boxnext to the Network Icon.

Apply and come out of the list.
-
You will now be able to see the network icon on your screen.
There is a second method too for this. Just follow the steps in order.

Download the TweakUI which is from Microsoft.

Got to Desktop tab in the next window
-
Do the same steps as defined above (Check the box next to the Network Icon and apply and come out of the list.)

Once done, close Tweak UI and restart your computer after making changes.

Missing desktop network icon.what problem
Hello,
During the fresh installation of any Windows Operating system the Network icon usually appears on the Desktop.But some times it does not show the Network icon.I am providing the detail steps to restore the  Network icon in Windows XP,Vista,7
Â
For Windows XP:
Â
1.Click on the Start Button and open Run .
2.Type the following command in the dialog box

Control desk.cpl,,@Web
Â
3.Click OK
4.Check the My Network Places from the options .
5.Click OK to apply the settings.

For Windows Vista:
Â
1.Right click anywhere on empty desktop.
2.Click on Personalize.
3.On the upper left side pane,click on Change desktop icons.
4.Check the option for Network.
5.Click OK to apply the settings.

For Windows 7:
Â
1.Right click anywhere on the desktop .
2.Click on Personalize.
2.On the upper left side pane,select Change desktop icons.
3.Check the option for Network.
4.Click OK to apply the settings.
Â
This would show the Network icon on the desktop.

Missing desktop network icon.what problem
As for the usual installation of Windows XP, the Show Desktop Icons feature is turned on, but in reality only the icon of Recycle Bin is included and put on the Desktop.
This can be solved by upgrading a previous version of Windows to a current Windows XP and that's how all of the user icons stay on the desktop. These icons include My Computer, Internet Explorer, My Network Places and My Documents.
However, these icons are no longer included, and are not added on the desktop for any usual installation or upgrade. So in order to add My Computer, Internet Explorer, My Network Places and My Documents icons to your desktop you'll need to do the following:
1. Go to Properties by clicking the right-click button on your desktop;
2. Click Customize Desktop on the Desktop tab;
3. In Desktop icons simply select the check boxes of the icons you'd prefer having on your Desktop;
4 Confirm it by clicking OK, and then again click OK to save these adjustments.
