It seems that error is pretty common on Windows users that have active Windows support. To see what’s causing the problem, you need to perform some checking first. First thing to check is your hard drive. It needs to be checked for errors and other file system problems. Download and install PC Tools Performance Toolkit. Follow the instructions to download and unpack the file.
Once installed, start PC Tools then go to “Recovery” tab and click “Repair Drives”.
Under “Select Drive Operation”, select “Surface Scan” to perform a complete check on the drive and then check “Perform on reboot”. Since the problem is with the operating system because of the failed Windows update, the concerned drive is the system drive or drive C. From the list of drives, select drive C then click “Start” and then “Continue”.
Close PC Tools then restart the computer to begin the test. After the test, try updating Windows again from the Windows Update feature. See if it updates successfully. If the update fails again, try running the System File Checker tool. Click “Start”, “All Programs”, “Accessories”, right-click “Command Prompt” and select “Run as administrator”. Enter your administrator password when you are prompted to continue.
In the command prompt, type without quotes “sfc /scannow” then hit Enter. If you are prompted to insert the Windows setup CD, insert it on your optical drive and continue. When it is finished, restart your computer and try running Windows Update again. If this doesn’t work, download and install the System Update Readiness tool according to your operating system:
Once the tool is installed, run Windows Update again then see if it works.
