Hello,
I have a question. I am using Windows Server 2003 and I was just wondering if there's any Configuration Manager attribute or operation that would need a particular functional level for the domain and forest.Â
I am interested to know if I need to upgrade or something. Thank you very much!
Does any Configuration Manager attribute need a particular domain/forest level
Every domain controller in the forest has to be running Windows Server 2003 earlier than you can modify the forest functional level to Windows Server 2003. When you move up the forest functional level, all domains in the forest will automatically have their domain functional level raised to Windows Server 2003.
To raise the forest functional level for a forest,
a)Â Â Â Â Â Open the Active Directory Domains And Trusts console
b)Â Â Â Â Â Right-click Active Directory Domains and Trusts in the console tree, and select Raise forest Functional Level from the shortcut menu.
c)Â Â Â Â Â The Raise Domain Functional Level dialog box opens
d)Â Â Â Â Click Raise
e)Â Â Â Â Â Click OK
Approaches for raise Functional Levels
You can use one of the next approaches to shift from Windows 2000 mixed and Windows 2000 native functional levels to the Windows Server 2003 functional level for the entire forest. These are:
-
Windows 2000 native route: This approach involves raising the domain functional level to Windows native, and then raising the forest functional level to Windows Server 2003.
-
Windows Server 2003 route: This approach engages raising the domain functional level to Windows native, and after that to the Windows Server 2003 functional level. The forest functional level has to finally be changed to Windows Server 2003.

Well Nathan there is the solution for your problem.
No. Â The only exception is when a full forest trust is required, which itself requires a minimum forest level of Windows Server 2003. Â A full forest trust is needed for the following:
To discover computers in another forest
The option Allow only site server initiated data transfers from this site system, which is a configuration option for Internet-based site systems that are installed in the perimeter network to ensure that connections are only initiated from the intranet.
