In case of Definition:

LAN is a network that connects over a small distance, whereas Ethernet is a types of networking protocol used as LAN. In case of Identification: There were multiple types of networking protocols once, which included Arcnet and Token-Ring. Eventually, the Ethernet protocol became the mainstream and standard used on all networks used virtually today.

In case of Function: Ethernet has officially stated the device that gives a protocol and steps to make sure of the efficient transport of data, whereas LAN is a term used to differentiate among networks that cover large distances.
