Probably you haven’t heard of ‘Google Local Guides.’ It is a Local Guides programme that Google announced just a couple of months back. It is a ‘Google Maps’ feature that allows you to contribute to making online maps and information more reliable and trustworthy.
As mentioned, when you sign-up for the ‘Local Guides’ Program, you get an additional tab on your Google Maps app. It is also available via a desktop version of Local Guides. When it comes to finding some information, Google is always there to the rescue, but how many times have you felt that Google is not perfect? Probably a ton of times, and mostly while navigating on the maps. The Local Guides Programme aims in making a better version of Google Maps by giving the end users(The Guides) power to edit and modify what could be incorrect information.
What’s in it for the users?
The people who sign up for Google’s Local Guide get rewarded with points and badges according to their level of contribution. Presently, Google has 5 Levels that a user can achieve by his/her contributions in various fields. Some of the places where Google offers the points are

There’s more. With each Level Up, you get some exciting stuff from Google. Totally free. A Level 3 Local Guide could start his/her own ‘Local Guides Community’ and have oneself trained under experts from ‘Google’. You even get a badge next to your profile photo on Google. I being a Level 4 Local Guide got a 1TB storage of Google Drive for two years completely free!! If one had to buy a Drive Storage, the 1 TB option would cost him/her a hefty $10 per month! And Google gave it to me as a gift for my contributions!
That is incredible from Google. You even get to enjoy fresh tips from ‘Expert Photographers’ around the world. Level 5 Local Guides receive an insider preview of all the latest technologies Google is working on and ‘Beta Testing’ of various new apps being developed by Google. A Level 5 Local Guide can have the opportunity of being in a ‘Local Guides Summit’ which happens every year. It is an All Expense Paid 2N3D trip from Google at Exotic locations. I can’t wait to have a Level 5 Badge on my profile.
