When the ONEPLUS One handset was launched in 2014, it set the precedent for the company which makes cutting-edge phones at relatively cheap prices. Since then three handsets have been launched which have cemented the reputation of ONEPLUS. However, until now ONEPLUS phones were only available through a complicated invite-system which left many frustrated with the whole process.
Co-founder Carl Pei says it was to ensure that company didn’t manufacture unnecessary phones which would have scaled up its inventory costs. It was a necessary evil to make sure that company could cut its losses especially since it was a new in the market. But three devices later ONEPLUS has gathered a respectable fan-base that anticipates new announcements. The speculation regarding ONEPLUS Three has been around for some time. People are predicting everything from 6GB RAM to over clocked GPUs.
ONEPLUS has decided to ditch the invite only system. Carl Pei, the co-founder of ONEPLUS has emphasized that the company has evolved to a stage where they are confident in launching the device in the market without the invite system. It is indeed a big step forward as it puts ONEPLUS along with other mainstream brands. Earlier, ONEPLUS benefited from the invite system as it reduced their inventory costs. ONEPLUS made devices after they had already been ‘sold’. This system made sure that ONEPLUS didn’t had any ‘surplus’ devices.
ONEPLUS Three is slated to be officially announced at 12:30 ET on 14 June.However, much remains to be seen whether the company can live up to the expectations from the device.
