After I upgraded the Format Factory, when I press start, it shows me a message that says illegal format name. It is now not working neither the new version nor the old version. Have any suggestions?

Hi Richard M Logan,
It would be better for us if you tell us your Operating System. If you are using Windows 7 then you must use system restore for you to revert your PC to the earlier time when your computer is running smoothly. Just click Start>Control Panel>System and Security, under Action Center locate “Restore your computer to an earlier time”. Then click “Open System Restore” tab.
From there you can choose a date that you believe your computer is running good. Or select Start>Run type cmd, at command prompt type sfc /scannow. If those instructions still don’t resolve the issue, then, restart your computer, press F8 before the Windows started. Then select "Safe mode with command prompt" at the main menu. At the command prompt you will type chkdsk /f. This command will automatically repair damaged system files that have been affected during your installation.

The reason of the error might be due to illegal characters included in the name of the file you are converting.
Another reason is it might be a very long name. You can try to rename your file to convert as test.mp4 or test.avi temporarily just to check if it will successfully convert. Together with this, try to temporarily change the output folder to a local disk like C:, and not inside a folder.

If you encounter that error when you click “Start” in Format Factory, that probably means the format of the file you selected is not supported by the player. Format Factory is an application designed to convert audio and video files to another format. For video, it supports the following formats: MP4, 3GP, MPG, AVI, WMV, FLV, and SWF.
For audio, it supports the following formats: MP3, WMA, AMR, OGG, AAC, and WAV. If you want to convert a file, make sure it is one of the supported file formats otherwise you will not be able to convert the file and you may get an error by doing this. If you are using an older version, download the latest from Format Factory.
The latest version supports Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.
