I have a Windows 7 PC. It is a 64-bit machine. While reading an article, I came across AirSnort. I heard it is a good tool when it comes to networking, but I am unable to understand what exactly it does. Kindly provide as much information on it as possible.

AirSnort is a wireless LAN tool that operates by passively monitoring transmissions and cracks encryption keys on 802.11b WEP networks. It is a set of tools for auditing WLANs.

If you want to download AirSnort for Windows, you can do so from FileHippo or their official website or Lawyerment.

Even though it is a cracking tool, it has been made public to find out how secure a WEP network is. It can be used by system administrators to find how vulnerable a network is and remedy that situation.

AirSnort is a wireless network or Wi-Fi encryption tool normally used to break encryption codes in Wi-Fi networks with WEP security protection. It collects information from 802.11b WEP networks. It is done passively by the software where it collects packets passing in and out of the system and it requires about five (5) to ten (10) million packets.

When enough packets have been obtained, it is now enough for the encryption to guess the password. The amount of time required to break the password is very small which is only under a second. Though AirSnort can infiltrate WEP networks, it is not capable of breaking Wi-Fi networks with enabled WPA protection. If you wish to download, go to AirSnort on SourceForge.

AirSnort is no longer being developed. The last update was way back 2013.
