The term cloud is used as a metaphor for the Internet, refer to Cloud computing is a model for on-demand access to computing resources such as hardware, software, network infrastructure, applications, and services.

These resources are accessed over a network, such as the Internet, and can be rapidly and easily provisioned and customized.

There are three cloud computing service models: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IAAS), Platform-as-a-Service (PAAS, and Software-as-a-Service (SAAS)

Amazon played a key role in the development of cloud computing by modernising their data center which, like most computer networks , were using as little as 10% of their capacity at any one time, just to leave room for occasional spikes.

Having found that the new cloud architecture resulted in significant internal efficiency improvements whereby small, fast-moving "two-pizza teams" could add new features faster and more easily, Amazon initiated a new product development effort to provide cloud computing to external customers, and launched Amazon Web Service on a utility basis.

To simply understand what the word Cloud means in internet terminology for non-technical users, it simply denotes resources accessed from the web or over the internet.

An example of a service that is provided in the cloud is the file hosting service. File hosting websites let you upload your files to their web servers with a limited amount of storage space.

They sometimes offer, together with several other services, the ability to synchronize your computer with the files you uploaded when your computer is connected to the internet.

Some of the websites that offer cloud services to users all over the world are Dropbox, Box.com, Google Drive, and more. Upon creating your account on any of these websites, you are given a specific amount of cloud storage space and this is for the free account.

If you think that it’s kind of small and you need a lot bigger space for your files, you simply need to purchase a premium account so they can increase your storage capacity. For Dropbox, you have 2 GB; and for Google Drive, you have 5 GB of free cloud storage space.

If you need to upload very sensitive data like videos, you better check first their Terms and Conditions so you will be aware of the dos and don’ts when uploading files.
