I have a laptop PC with windows 7 in it. I need to install windows 10 preview on a separate disk so that I can try it out since my laptop has a very small SSD. I do not want to interfere with it so I need a way of installing and running Windows on this external disk. Is it possible? How can I go about it? are there any negative impacts?
Can I install Windows 10 Technical Preview on Separate disk?
Yes, it is possible to install Windows 10 on an external hard drive. Here is how. Format your external hard drive using the NTFS file system. Once this is done, you need to have the Windows 10 setup CD or the Windows 10 ISO image. If what you have is the ISO image, you need to burn it on a blank DVD-R or use a virtual drive to mount the ISO image.
If you want to use a virtual drive to mount the ISO file, you can use DAEMON Tools Lite. Download and install it then create at least 1 virtual drive on your computer so you can mount the ISO file. Next, create 2 folders on your computer and label them WAIK Files and Windows Files.
If you will create the 2 folders on your drive C, make sure your system drive has more than 5 GB free space left for the files to be added. Visit Western Digital Solid State Drive for the full instructions. The steps are done on Windows 7 and since you are installing Windows 10, the instructions are similar.
Simply use the Windows 10 ISO file or setup CD. Mount the ISO file to the virtual drive so you can copy the Windows 10 files to the Windows Files folder you created.
