Hi one of my friends have an Apple PC. I formatted it because it was full of viruses thinking my friend has a backup of his files. But he hasn't taken a backup. Can I restore the old files by means of any software?

Yes Sean, you can recover files even after formatting a drive. However, the results are not 100% and you might still end losing some of your data. Here the some of the different options that you can try.

First try the Tune Up trial. You can find it here. http://www.tune-up.com It works most of the time, specially for deleted files.

Another better option is the Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery (formerly Digital Media Recovery) 3.5.0.0: Free Download. Its trial run is free but you need to purchase it to be able to recover files and save them in a location of your choice.

Yet another option is to use Ontrack Datarecovery . It is a powerful tool that can do the job for you as well. Try any of these and let me know if you find any success. Else I will look for other solutions too.

Sean, after formatting is a very difficult tasks to do especially if you did not back up or copy your files or partition before formatting. All the files on the formatted partitions would be lost. However, you still have chanced to restore your important files even after format. It can be recovered by data recover software. Whenever you initialize your hard disk, you must first back up or else it will erase all data on the hard disk. All apply pc have a mac OS 8.1 to access the files. You can not see any files on the hard disk only a single document is accessible explaining that your files are still on the hard disk but unaccessible. You will be able to access those files once you connect that hard disk to computer running Mac OS 8.1.
