The answer to your question is yes. Just like Windows 7-Windows 8 or Windows XP-Windows 8, you can upgrade vista to Windows 8.
Now coming to the files, most likely there is a chance of getting some bugs  when u do the upgrading process. So i recommend you to back up your  files to some external storage, format the HDD and try win-8, or you can partition the HDD with Win-8.
When upgrading from Vista to 8 you can keep
1. Windows settings and.
2. User account and files.
Â
You can upgrade Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 to Windows 8.
The things Windows 8 will keep after upgrading,
Current OS |
Windows 8 |
Windows 7 |
Will keep programs, Windows settings, user accounts and files |
Windows Vista |
You keep Windows settings, user accounts and files |
Windows XP |
You only keep user accounts and files |

1. Take a bootable USB or DVD of the Windows 8 Release preview ISO.
2. Run the setup.exe file.
3. Select Go online to install updates now, and click on Next.
4. Check the I agree to the license agreement box, and click on Accept.Â
5. Select what you would like to keep in Windows 8 Release Preview from your Windows Vista and click on Next.Â
 6. Click on the Install button. (The computer will restart a few times during this, don't worry)
7. When finished, select to Use express settings or Customize.
8. Now your computer is ready to start Windows 8.
Â
(Optional)
**You will notice that you will have a C:$Windows.~BT and a C:Windows.old folder that contains copies of files from the previous Windows installation.
Yes, you can upgrade to Windows 8 if you use the clean install only, starting your installation from within Windows is the only way to keep your files.
Though the Release Preview of Windows 8 meant for Consumer Preview, you can upgrade your Windows Vista to windows 8, but you might not be able to keep all of your files, programs, and settings. In windows vista you would be able to keep windows settings, user accounts and files.
