Can using VPN transmit a virus?

I use a VPN connection at times for work, and I am being told the network has a virus and do not connect until it is cleared. Can a virus on the work network be transmitted through the VPN? I need to get my work done but I don't want to get the virus and I wanted to be sure I had the correct information. Thank you.

Yes of course, connecting to a VPN definitely brings a huge risk of getting virus attacks. The reason for this is that a VPN is virtually the same as a physical network plugged into a switch in your office. But having a relevant virus guard installed with regular updates will reduce this risk up to a certain extent.
