You cannot use MSPaint to open some image files e.g. tiff., jpg., gif., tif., and png., if MSPaint is running under earlier versions of operating system, e.g. Windows 95, Windows NT. Early versions of MSPaint do not support those file types.

However, some additional formats are supported after MSWindows 98. File types of jpeg., jpg., bmp. and gif. could be opened under MSWindows 98, ME and 2000. And file types of jpe., jfif., tif., tiff. and png. could be opened under MSWindows XP.

Since MSWindows XP supports all above formats, you shall use MSWindows XP if possible.

Hello Tomwelton,

You will have to convert the files to another format like png and they try opening them again. To convert the image format I will suggest adobe fireworks cs5. Just copy the image in fireworks, and then click on file and then save as. Choose png from the list of image formats and the save the image to a destination you can trace.

You can also try opening the document using another image editing software like ms office picture manager or even fireworks and see  if the same problem will be experienced.

But it a bit strange because gif and jpeg images should open just well in ms paint.

Yes this might be problem when someone use early version of windows I mean earlier then 98 version of windows. I heard about that the version 95, and windows NT do not support files like jpeg, and gif and you have to know that the file .jpg and .jpeg are same. I mean the mspaint do not support these kind of file in those version of windows. So I think it is better to get a latest version of windows though the latest version like windows 7 and vista come up I still recommended you to get version xp. XP added all format of image like .jpeg , tif, tiff, .png and so you need not to be worried about this kind of problem.
