What are Electronic Flight Bags and are there any classifications? What are the various classifications of Electronic Flight Bags if any? What are the significant features of each class? Are there any special use of each class? When was the first time EFB was introduced and used in aircrafts? Thank you.

Comprehensive definition of Electronic Flight Bags and their classification

Electronic flight bags are the equipments used by flight crew to do flight related tasks more easily without the hastle of using papers, as for naming it was named after traditional flight bag which was used to be 18 kg, replaced nowadays by so much lighter computers and tablets, also they are classified into 3 classes:

Class 1: Standard commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) such as laptops and iPads

Class 2: They are modified COTS for mounting power data purpose

Class 3: Which are subject to airworthiness requirements and, unlike PEDs, they must be under design control.
