I’m not sure what applications it is you are referring to since different companies use different software to do different tasks for their productivity and overall operation. But, of course, there are similarities with the software they use like for example the one mentioned in the post above, the Microsoft Office. If a company does not require latest functions of the software and only relies on processing different office documents then I think they will be comfortable with older versions of the product like for example the Microsoft Office 2003.
But, of course, if a company wants to experience an optimized task and benefit from it and makes it for the employees to do their task much faster, then upgrading to a much higher version like Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 would still be an advantage. Other higher versions are already available. Just check with your software store. And don’t forget some accounting software that can help automate any accounting job.
