I am receiving the following error message while trying to install Microsoft Office Word on my Dell computer pre-installed with Windows XP Professional: Error: 1402. Could not open key H-key_local_machinesoftwaremicrosoftwindows currentversionrunoptionalcomponentsmsfs.

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel. Can anyone help me solve the issue?

Hello Backstere,

I suggest you to disable the third party application to avoid getting that error.

Run As Admin:

1. Go to the start menu and find the program icon you want to start.

2. <Shift> <Right Click> on it.

3. Select run as.

If that doesn’t work try this:

  • In the start menu, right click on the shortcut for any Office app, select “RunAs Admin”. If RunAs does not appear, right click and drag the shortcut to the desktop.
  • Create a shortcut on the desktop.
  • Right click on the desktop shortcut,
  • RunAs admin should be there.

Activate the application/office:

  • 2007 Office button / 2010 File tab.
  • Help.
  • Click on “Activate the Application”.
  • Follow prompts to enter product key.
  • Close the app.
  • Restart app normally.
