Hello Shannia,
I bet you can create a copy of your windows 2008 backup on an external hard disk drive, as long as the hard disk drive is large enough in terms of the space that it has.
You can just copy the contents of the information that you have stored on the server and save then in folders on the external hard disk drive so that to have a recovery copy in case the server crashes down and loses all its contents.
You can also just a do a backup on the server, and when the process is done copy whatever contents that have been backed up and save a copy of them on an external hard disk drive for safety of your information in case the system malfunctions.

Yes you can backup your External Hard Disk on another External Hard Disk, Internal Hard Disk or CD or DVD storage media. it just depends on what you think is convenient to do. I suggest that you just store it to another hard disk and the use RoboCopy as a way to backup your file. Look for the code in the internet to see how to backup the file in a hard disk using robo copy. You can specify a time here on when you will start doing the duplicating of your hard disk. It will also prevent you to lose some of your data.
