Creating objects in Adobe Flash and how to manipulate it

I want to check Flash CS4 and would like to know different ways to manipulate objects. Give me and show me how to create a symbol in Flash CS4? What are the parts of the Flash environment I need to know and need to identify to better understand how to do this? What is the purpose of Active Library in this? How can I make an object or shape with different colors and with gradient color? What is linear gradient and what are the other types of gradient effects that I can use in Flash CS4?
