Customizing image color in Illustrator

I downloaded a file with extension .al from the internet. When I was about to open it in Illustrator, it comes out with the Swatch Panel. The file has a monochrome background with the same shades of one color. It has thin curve grey lines in front of the background. Is there a way that I can separate the lines from the background then recolor it so it will not be visible with the eyes?

  1. I assume your *.ai file contain a bitmap image or any other raster image.
  2. Select the image.
  3. There’s a button "Live Trace" on control pallet and immediately next to the button there's a small arrow head.
  4. Click on the arrow button right next to the live trace in control pallet and select one from below.

    • Black and White
    • One color logo
    • Grayscale
  5. With the image still selected click on "Expand" button on the control pallet. Right click on the image and select ungroup.
  6. Now your image is ungrouped and you can select/change color or delete any part of your image.
