Damaged Hard Drive Data Recovery

Firstly, you should know whether the failure in your hard drive is a physical drive failure i.e. an external damage or a logical drive failure i.e. the data stored is lost.

If there is an external damage, it may be one of the following-

  • No power (the drive is not spinning)
  • Extreme heating of the drive
  • Ticking sound
  • A loud ticking noise
  • The drive is not being initialized.

In above cases of external damage, it is better to hand over the drive to a hard disk recovery specialist as you have only one shot at the data recovery.

If there is data damage, then you can recover it by yourself by using any of the data recovery software.

You need to perform the following steps-

  • Remove the hard disk drive from the PC and insert it into a new PC using a USB to IDE/SATA adapter.
  • Try to copy data to another drive on this PC.
  • Use any data recovery software like Recuva, PC Inspector File Recover, Hiren’sBootCD, etc. to recover the files. You can download these freely over the internet.
  • Just remain sure that you do not install the recovery software on the same drive from which you are trying to recover the data. Doing this would overwrite your files.
