Hi
There is literally no fixed solution when it comes to the security of data stored in a USB device such as USB flash drive and external hard drive. The security of the data in a USB device depends on the user. To protect the contents of your USB device, you should be cautious as to where you plug it or connect it.
If you need to connect your USB device to somebody’s computer, make sure the machine is not infected with a virus. The most common infection that usually hits a USB device is the autorun virus. It is a type of virus that is being transported via USB device like USB flash drive.
When your USB device is infected by an autorun virus, the folders and files get renamed with an EXE extension like “Image.exe”. The virus hides the actual files and folders and copies their names adding the .exe extension. When a USB device infected with an autorun virus is inserted on a computer with autorun enabled, the virus launches immediately and spreads to the hard drive modifying files and folders.
To avoid your PC get infected by this virus, autorun should be disabled for removable devices. Another way of protecting your USB device is to avoid sharing it with others.
