Hi Experts,
I’m using a Windows 2003 server and I can’t delete or move a file on a shared drive.
The server won’t allow, when I tried to delete or move a file, it prompts that the program is being used but actually it’s not.Â
I didn’t encounter this problem with my previous server.Â
Can you help me on how to solve this issue?
Thanks in advance.
Delete or move a file on a shared drive!
Hi Katewoo,
Might probably you don't have the permission to access the shared drive. Â
You have to configure first the shared drive permission. How?
-
You have to click the file that you want to configure in shared drive permissions and then > PROPERTIES
-
In the dialog box > sharing tab > Permissions
-
In the User ( select, computers groups) choose the object type > USERS > OK
-
Below the names of the object to select, you have to type the group name or user name you want to shared file permissions and then click OK.
-
in the dialogbox > PERMISSIONS > Group Names or user names box> select the user you want to shared file permissions.
-
You can deny or allow the permissions in the tab and click OK.
 Hope this might help you.
Thanks.
Delete or move a file on a shared drive!
Hello Katewoo,
You will need to shut down the programs that might be using the file that you want to delete completely under the task manager, Just press CTRL+ALT+DEL on your keyboard and then open the task manage. Under the processes, check for any processes that might be running and they are under the file, close all them.
Then restart the computer, and they try deleting or moving the file again.
Also make sure that you have administrative rights because as a guest user you may not be allowed to delete or move the files as you want to. So just check that.
Hope this helps.

Delete or move a file on a shared drive!
Thanks TechyV!
I figured out that I don’t have the permission to move the file.Â
I followed the steps in configuring shared drive permission and also checked the task manager if there is other programs running that are using the file.
Sure enough, I was able to move the file.Â
Thanks Stephen_Lee and Mahesh Babu!
