Data protection manager 2012 is a tool in system center that provides Exchange server, File server, SharePoint, and SQL server with tape-based, disk-based, and bare-metal recovery capabilities.

Microsoft added seven new improvement features in DPM 2012 that are as follows:

• Better recovery from SharePoint farms at an item level.
• Remotely management capabilities DPM.
• Improved the use of tapes with protection group sets.
• Centralized management for DPM servers.
• Authentication based on certificates for computers in untrusted domains and workgroups.
• Supports for protecting Virtual Machine Manager hosts.
• Support in DPM servers shares one instance of an SQL server for the DPM database.
