My son is forcing me to switch to a new phone. He said, I am using Android Jelly Beans and there is something called Kit-Kat version. I don't know much about Android and difference between its versions. Can someone please tell me the main points in all android versions? Please reply in easy language as I am not a technical person.
Difference between all android versions NOT in technical language
Dear James S Savoy,
Android was introduced by "Google" and "Open Handset Alliance (OHA)" in Nov 2007 and its first version for commercial use was released on Sep 2008. Android is the operating system (or main software) which runs on millions of mobile phones, tablets, watches, computers, games etc etc. To introduce you to android world , I would like to talk about android version history first.
Android Version History:
Android versions have names comprising two sets.
Numeric portion and alphabetical confectionary theme code names (only first two versions are exceptions)
-
Alpha (1.0)
-
Beta (1.1)
-
Cupcake (1.5)
-
Donut (1.6)
-
Eclair (2.0-2.1)
-
Froyo (2.2-2.2.3)
-
Gingerbread (2.3 – 2.3.7)
-
Honeycomb (3.0 – 3.2.6)
-
Icecream Sandwitch (4.0 – 4.0.4)
-
Jellybeen (4.1 – 4.3.1)
-
Kit Kat (4.4 – 4.4.4)
-
Lollipop (5.0)
Now i come to the main part of your question and that is simplified differance between all of these versions.
When talking with novice and non technical person, I can just say there are 4 major differances and imporvements in all releases of android versions than the previouse ones and that are:
-
When new android version is released , it support more apps, programs than the previous ones
-
It supports less battery / power consumption
-
It is more speedy than previous ones.
-
The graphics or display results are much higher than the previous versions.
Therefore new versions (kit Kat and Lollipop) are more effecient , elegant and reliable than their previous ones.

Google doesn’t actually have an explanation as to why their Android mobile operating system is named after sugary desserts or confectioneries. According to Randall Sarafa, a Google spokesman, the naming is “kind of like an internal team thing, and we prefer to be a little bit — how should I say — a bit inscrutable in the matter”.
The obvious thing is that the Android mobile operating system when released, go by dessert names and in alphabetical order. Its version history started with the release of the Android alpha in November 5, 2007. Android 1.0 is the first commercial version released in September 2008. The Android platform is a mobile operating system that is continuously being developed by the Open Handset Alliance and Google.
The latest version at the moment is Android 10.0 or just Android 10 released in September 3, 2019. Among its features include:
- Support for Notification Bubbles.
- Background apps can no longer jump into the foreground.
- New permissions to access location in background and to access photo, video and audio files.
Google announced to the public on August 22, 2019 that the official release would be called just “Android 10” dropping the convention of using letter and dessert names.
