Do I need plugin to open MDI files in office?

I use MDIÂ file format because it take up less disk space than other formats. But I cannot open MDI files in office 2010. Do I need some specific plugins or there is the easiest way?

Install the Microsoft Office Document Imaging program. To do this, follow these steps:

You can use share point designer 2007 as a free download from the Microsoft download center. You can download it from
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/?displaylang=en
After downloading select customize as the installation option.
On the installation options tab, select NOT AVAILABLE for these three sections:
Then expand office tools.
Select Microsoft Office Document Imaging as well as select Run all From My Computer option.
