Downgrade from Microsoft Office 2010 to Microsoft Office 2007

I currently purchased five new workstations with Windows 7 Ultimate as their operating system to replace five Windows XP workstations. My five new workstations were purchased with Microsoft Office 2010. My users are accustomed to using Microsoft Office 2007 which is what was installed on their Windows XP machines.

They are now requesting for me to downgrade from Office 2010 to Office 2007. I would like to know what are the steps involved in downgrading from Office 2007 to Office 2010. Is Office 2007 compatible with Windows Ultimate 7? Is this something i can do myself or do i need professional assistance?

I was also wondering if i should just return the workstations to the vendor and ask them to place Office 2007 instead of Office 2010. I was also wondering if i would need to purchase new licenses or will the licenses i purchase for Office 2010 work for the Office 2007 installation.

Any response will be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Downgrade Microsoft Office 2010 to Microsoft Office 2007:

I wonder that OEM licenses can be downgraded because of its license attribute. OEM can be installed on just one computer and cannot be transferred to another computer.

By the way, we will assume that your copy is under Volume Licensing program. Microsoft provided in Volume License Program the downgrade rights from Office 2010 to Office 2007 so that their client will be having rights to downgrade their software or application to any previous version of the same line of products.

If your Microsoft Office in hand for example is Microsoft Office Standard 2007, you can downgrade your product to Microsoft Office Standard 2003.

If you are Downgrading from Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 that has OneNote included in the package to Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007, you will be having only the rights for what was included in Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 where OneNote is not included. Downgrading and use of your acquired product or components from Microsoft must be installed on the same unit or computer same with as your purchased package or version of the licensed Microsoft product.

Microsoft allows their clients to install multiple Microsoft Office Products in just one computer unit. If you want to use the Microsoft Office OneNote which is available on Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 and wanting to use Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007, you must acquire separate license for Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007.

Here’s the downgrade line or path for Microsoft Office products:

  1. Your MS Office Pro is down gradable to the previous version of MS Office Pro.
  2. A copy of MS Office Std Edition is down gradable to the previous version of MS Office Std Edition.
  3. Downgrading from MS Office Pro to MS Office Std Edition is not allowed.

The following lists are the downgrade rights based on Microsoft Office product versions to the previous version according their line:

  1. If you have license in hand of Microsoft Office Pro Plus2010, you have the rights to Volume Licensing downgrade to MS Office Pro Plus2007.
  2. If you license in hand of MS Office Std Edition 2010, you have the rights to Volume Licensing downgrade to Microsoft Office Std Edition 2007.
  3. If you have license in hand of Microsoft Office Pro Plus2007, then you have the rights to Volume Licensing downgrade to Microsoft Office Pro Ent 2003.
  4. If you have license in hand of Microsoft Office Ent 2007, then you will be having the Volume Licensing downgrade rights to Microsoft Office Pro Ent 2003 and MS Office One Note2003.
  5. If you have license in hand of Microsoft Office Small Bus 2007, then you will have the volume licensing downgrade right to Microsoft Office Small Bus 2003.
  6. And if you license in hand of Microsoft Office Share Point Dsgnr 2007, then you will be having the rights to volume licensing downgrade to Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003.
  7. Only Software Assurance customers with licensed Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2007 have the rights to continue to use Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2007.

For more info, please refer to Microsoft Volume Licensing agreement.

Downgrade from Microsoft Office 2010 to Microsoft Office 2007

Hi Sarah,

Firstly, MS office 2007 is of course compatible with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Now if you want to downgrade office 2010 to office 2007, you just have to uninstall 2010 and install office 2007. All your data regarding office 2010 will be intact. You might get some problem with your MS word. Before you uninstall 2010, you should change all .docx file to .doc file, which is compatible with MS Word 2007.

At worse case, you'll have to create a new mail profile and point that profile at your existing data. Your mailbox may be an exchange mailbox or it may be a POP or IMAP mailbox. If the mail profile you used in Office 2010 isn't recognized, you'll have to re-add your mail account when you create the profile.

This is something you can do all by yourself & do not need that much professional help. You do not need to return those workstations.

About the license think, yes you can downgrade your product license from 2010 to 2007. I am giving you a URL which you might find useful.

Thank you, I hope it will help to solve your problem.
