I am facing weird problems with windows 2000 Advanced server machine. Everything is fine but whenever I start IE or any other application, I get an error that says: “Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142)”. Even the task manager fails to start. Then I have to close these applications and I am able to start applications normally until this error appears again.
Does anyone know the cause for this error? Please guide me.

Error: Application fails to initialize properly
I also faced the same kind of problem once. There is a limited number of applications that one can Run correctly. In order to change this limit you are required to change your “Desktop Heap” parameters in the registry. Below is the way to do it.
-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSessionManagerSubSystems
-
Modify the section that says “SharedSection=x, y, z”
-
X is system-wide heap
-
Y is per-session heap
-
Z is non-interactive heap
-
Another solution might be turning off anything running in the background like firewall, Antivirus, background tasks etc. Make sure that you are disconnected from internet.
-
This may also be due to some corrupted software. So Run a scan to see whether all applications are Ok on your system. The scan will be run in DOS prompt. Then you can find the defected application / program that you will have to reinstall. Running a repair command from the boot menu may also solve the problem as it will repair any corrupted software in the windows file.
-
Also in Windows 2000 certain services can restrict to open GL.. Go to control panel and use administration tool to see services that are running. Putting these services to manual start may help in solution.

If the error you are receiving is also giving the file name then simply logon to safe mode and open regedit and remove any references to that file or program.

Error: Application fails to initialize properly
It seems that your programs are having trouble initializing. It is either you have a failing RAM memory card or it is just that you have too many opened applications and too small available memories left. Check if you have many opened applications on your desktop. Close some of it so you can free up some memories. If you have plenty of memories available, you might want to check the condition of the RAM stick attached to your CPU. I think it has a problem and is already failing.
If you have several RAM memory sticks installed in the memory slot, check each card by removing it one at a time. Turn off first your computer before removing your memory card. Remove one card then run your computer. This way you will know which card is faulty. If all is OK then you need to reinstall your Windows platform.
