To fix this error, do a System Restore. You can also uninstall other antivirus software on your computer. Make sure that you have all the latest updates of Windows installed. Type this command into the command prompt, “sfc/scannow.” This command will let you resolve any corrupted Windows file issue or wrong registry entries. Make sure that you run this command using administrator privileges, and you restart your computer after this process completes.

Sometimes this error code will be caused by other programs in your computer that interferes with the installation that you are attempting to do. To troubleshoot this error, delete the Windows Live folder, reset the browser to factory settings and disable third-party firewalls.

Also, try to uninstall Windows Essentials through CMD and to install it while being offline because this will create a more secure path, and offline installers do not require a network connection where your antivirus or firewalls will intercept the installation.

This error code “0x80096010” seems to appear in many different applications not just in Windows Essentials. It can also be triggered when installing the “Game For Windows” client. Try using the System File Checker utility. Press the Windows key + R to bring up the “Run” dialog then type the following and then hit Enter:

sfc /scannow

Insert your Windows installation CD or DVD when you are prompted then continue. Wait until it is complete. When the process is finished, restart the computer. If this doesn’t work, download and run the Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool. It supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 including Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2.

If this doesn’t work, run DISM. Press the Windows key + R to bring up the “Run” dialog then type without quotes “cmd” and then hit Enter to launch an elevated command prompt. In the command prompt window, type the following commands then hit Enter after every command:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Each command may take some time to finish so just wait.
