Hi Steve,
This problem may have been caused by a conflict in the Add-ins that are installed for Microsoft Word. You will have to troubleshoot this by way of elimination. Meaning, you will need to disable all add-ins and re-enable them one by one to find out which one is causing the problem.
Here are the steps to find out which Add-in is causing the problem.
1) You will need to start Microsoft Word in safe mode. In safe mode, add-ins will be disabled. To do this, hold down the “Ctrl” key while clicking on the MS Word application. If you get a prompt asking if you want to start Word in safe mode, select “Yes”.
2) Go to the File Menu, then go to “Options”, then “Add-in”. In the “Manage: Comm-in Add” section, click on “Go”.
3) This should now bring you to the list of Add-ins for MS Word. Uncheck all the boxes for all the Add-ins to disable them.
4) Close MS Word and re-launch it.
5) Now, go back to the menu that shows you all the Add-ins. (Follow Step 1-2, to get there).
6) Check or enable one Add-in then close MS Word.
7) If MS Word opens, then enable another add-in. Close MS Word and re-launch it. Keep repeating this procedure until you get to a point where MS Word gives you the error again. This will indicate that the last Add-in you enabled is the one causing this problem. Go back to Step 1 to disable this add-in.
8) You may re-enable the other Add-ins unless you get the error again.
In case you are running on Windows 7, you also need to make sure that MS Word is run with Administrator privileges.
Here’s how to do this:
1) Right-click on MS Word, select “Properties”, then go to the “Compatibility” tab. Look for Compatibility mode group and make sure that the check box for “Run this program in compatibility mode” is unchecked.
2) Select “Run this program as an Administrator”
If these steps do not work, you can also try running the Microsoft Fixit application. All you need to do is go the website below:

and click on “Fix this problem”.

Hi Steve,
Try to start Winword in safe mode and then try to open Winword from there if it did then the problem is another software conflicting with WinWord. You can disable those software to avoid issues with Winword from File > Options > Manage > Com-in Add and then disable the add ins, to test check one by one and see which one is causing the problem. You can also uncheck Compatibility mode test and make sure that the program runs as admin.
