First of all you have to make sure that your cell phone is compatible with windows media player that you are using in your computer. If your phone is not a smartphone and cannot be detected by windows media player, I suggest you to just download ringtones through your phone or your sim card's application provider.

Just go to Sim card menu and you can see all the categories including photo download, games download, ringtone download and other MMS download. This would be much easier so that you will not receive any error from windows media player. I hope it might help.

If you want to download some ringtones for your phone from the internet using your computer, first, check the supported file formats of your phone like if it supports MP3 (*.mp3), WAV (*.wav), AMR (*.amr), and others. You can find it in your phone’s manual.

On the other hand, if you want to copy the ringtones from your phone into your computer, check that your phone is connected properly to your computer. Install your phone’s software or PC suite on your computer to be able to access and browse contents on your phone. When connecting your phone to your computer, use the supplied USB cable that came with the package.

If you tried playing the ringtone directly from your phone using Windows Media Player when the error is triggered, try first copying the file or ringtone to your computer then play the copied ringtone on your computer. See if this works.
