Hi, experts.

I have installed WinRAR on my computer. While running, I attempted to install a new version of the software on the same installation folder as the previous. However, I am presented with the following error message:

"Cannot create RarExt.dll"!

Please help me guys. Thanks in advance.

Error when installing new version of WinRAR

Seems to be something that is using the old version of WinRAR and is not letting you overwrite the files because they are already in use. It is a common sense that you cannot overwrite a file that is being used by the system or within a system by a different application.

  • In your case there is the same thing that you try to install the new version while keeping the old version opened or extracting the files in the same folder.
  • Maybe there is a chance that the new version you downloaded is also in RAR format and you have opened it and then you try to install it. Obviously it will give you the error.
  • You can try deleting the first WinRAR completely and then reinstall the new version.
  • You can first extract the new version files, close all WinRAR windows and then install it.
  • Close any thing related to WinRAR from the taskbar too before installing.
