I am getting an error message when trying to open a Microsoft Office 2010 Word document.

It has graphs on it using a lower version of Word like 2007 version. An error would pop up saying,

"The filename. docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents." I am now at a loss and I need help in opening the document so I could continue with my pending job.

Thank you.

The file filename. docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents.

Try these steps:

Send your file to your Gmail account and open the attachment.

Once you open it, it will have this message: "

Sorry, we are unable to generate a view of the document at this time

Sorry, we are unable to generate a view of the document at this time. Alternatively, you can view the plain HTML (automatically redirecting).

  • Select the HTML version and your file should open already.

OR :

  • Open MS Word then click the Open folder.
  • locate your file then Change the Files of Type combination box to "Recover Text from AnyFile (*.*).
  • Select your document and click Open.

OR:

Download the Install Office 2010 Service Pack 1:

  • Use the Fix it solution to recover your word document: You can either have it recovered for you or fix it by yourself.
  • If you want it to be recovered for you, click the Fix it button or link. A File Download box opens up, click RUN and follow the fix it wizard steps.
  • If you want to fix it by yourself, you should know how to edit HTML. Go to the let me fix it myself section. Correct the mismatched Omath tags from there (use notepad when editing HTML).

THE FIX IT SOLUTION LETS YOU OPEN YOUR DOCUMENT/S, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM WILL RECUR ONCE YOU EDIT THE DOCUMENTS UNLESS THE MAIN CAUSE IS SOLVED.

  • Try these steps in solving the root cause:

GROUPING OBJECTS:

  • After opening of the recovered document, turn on the Selection pane found on the Home tab of the ribbon.
  • Click SELECT from the editing group of the Home tab, then Selection Pane.
  • Press the CTRL button on the keyboard and click each textbox in the selection pane.
  • Click Group button under the Format tab.
  • Save the document under a new name once all objects have been grouped each page.

SAVE THE DOCUMENT IN THE .RTF FILE FORMAT:

  • Open the document and click File, then Save.
  • In the Save As dialog box, click the Save as type dropdown box (just below the File Name dropdown box) and select
  • Rich Text Format (*.rtf).
  • Click Save.

You can not change file extensions and expect the file to open. The file must have a legal fine name (no special characters) and it MUST have the file extension for the format in which the file was saved.

TextEdit application on your Mac can also open Word Document files.

 Try opening it with TextEdit.

You can recover the text from ANY file in Microsoft Word by using File > Open and switching the Enable button to Recover Text from Any File.
