My daughter wanted to give me an older seagate external hardd rive but when she plugged it in
to my windows 7 computer, it's not showing up as being recognized. When we talked with the folks
at Best Buy they said I should just be able to plug and go? Could it be a driver issue? She uses
Windows 7 32 bit and I have windows 64bit. I was also wondering if it could be a bad usb port?

External harddrive not recognized by my computer
Â
Hello Marion,
The best way to isolate the problem with your external hard drive that didn’t recognize in Windows 7 are the following ideas.
·        Connect the External Hard drive to other PC to check if it recognized.
·        Check data cable and its end point by using Electronic tester to determine the continuity.
·        Try to connect a Flash drive in all USB port if it recognizes, to check all USB ports which are functioning well.
·         No need to worry about the driver of External Hard drive because Windows 7 can automatically give you an exact driver.
Please give us a feedback after you isolate the said trouble if it didn't work so we may give you other options.
External harddrive not recognized by my computer
Hi,
Â
Have you tried checking Computer and verified if it is detected there? If it is, most likely it just didn't autoplay hence the impression that it was not detected.
Â
Many external hard drives have an indicator light on them that turns on when the drive is plugged in, does your external hard drive have that and does it turn on? If not, try another USB port and try a known working USB cable. If it's still not detected on a USB port that's known to be working, and it's also not detected in Computer, then you may need to have that replaced already.
Â
Thank you. Hope it helps.
