Facebook uses XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) support that allows instant messaging users to operate internally with the said service.

It is latter upgraded into Chat and E-mail are merging the Inbox.

Facebook is also using video chat. For some software that caters Instant messaging, you can use CD Messenger and LAN Talk which is a software of Cezeo software.
