Hi Bryan dowdy,
It seem you have the same problem like other apple user who want to update their iPhone/iPod touch to iOS 5.0.
I don't know what is causing that problem, but it can be solved by restoring your iPhone with manually download iOS 5.0. IPSW (do not use iTunes to download the IPSW).
Here is how to do it :
1. Download iOS 5.0 IPSW here :
2. Backup your iPhone using iTunes, because restoring iPhone its mean your iPhone will be back to fresh iOS installation (all of your data will be deleted). if you back up your data, you can restore the data again after restoring iPhone.
3. after backup process finish, Hold down the Alt key (on Mac OS X) / the Shift key (on Windows) and click restore, the iTunes dialog window will show > select iOS 5.0 IPSW that you have download.
5. Wait until the installation completed.
If in the installation process you get error 3194, you must try to putting the iPhone into DFU mode and restoring while in recovery.
Error 3200 in iOS refers to connectivity issues. When you encounter a problem related to connection, it is not always “error 3200” that you will see on your screen. Sometimes you will receive “There was a problem downloading the software” or “The device isn't eligible for the requested build”. These are all related to connection problem.
If you are updating your iPhone’s operating system when you get this error, try checking your internet connection. Updating your phone’s firmware requires internet connection because the system or the data has to be downloaded to your computer before it can be installed on your handset that is if you are using iTunes to update your iPhone.
Also, before updating your iPhone to the latest iOS supported by your handset, always make sure you are using the latest version of iTunes. Go to Download iTunes Latest to get the latest version of iTunes. Download and install it on your computer. Before you begin updating your handset, check how fast your internet connection is.
This is because the firmware update you’ll be downloading is sometimes over 1 GB in size just like with Android. And with that big, a slow internet connection is a no no. If you have a slow internet connection at the moment, try updating at a later time like during off-peak hours where only few users are using the internet.
