I plugged my hard drive to my Windows Vista laptop and when I tried to delete some files, the access was denied because I didn’t have the correct security code. When I tried to change the security this message popped up: “Error Applying security an error occurred while applying security information to: E:…. Access is denied. Should I try changing the Admin account? What do you suggest I do?

Hi Noemibwhite,

It seems that the folder you are deleting the file from is restricted. Here is how you can change it:

  • Plug the drive
  • Right-Click the folder you are trying to delete the files from.
  • Then Click properties.
  • Uncheck Read Only
  • Then click Ok to close the Properties box and apply the changes.
  • Try opening the folder and delete the files again.

Hi there Noemibwhite,

The first thing you should try is to login to your Windows using the Administrator account. The administrator should have the rights to access every document. This is also the quickest workaround for your problem.

The next thing you should do is to check the owner and privileges of the folder. Right click on the folder and select Properties. You will see Security tab – click on it, under Advanced options check the Owner and permissions and if needed change permissions on the folder.

Best regards,
Drake Vivian
