Following a hyperlink on Word document fails due to restrictions

I am running Word 2003.  I have created a document with lots of pages, and I really find the hyperlink function very handy.  I created a table of contents then associate a link with a specific page: just press Ctrl+Left click then I am there.

But today when I tried it the usual way, it shows me an error message saying that because of some restrictions, the function may not work on the laptop. I have verified in Tools->Option->Edit that the "follow hyperlink" command is still "Ctrl+Left Click".  I did not install any software and security settings are the same.

I want to know about what caused this. Please help me, guys. Thanks a lot.

Whenever you’re getting an error clicking on a hyperlink, it could be that you’ve just upgraded your IE. If that’s the case, the registry key: HKEY_Local_MachineSoftwareClasseshtmlfileshellopencommand is either missing or corrupted. There is a Microsoft article that discusses and you may want to check out that page since it also has an automatic fix it for this particular issue. The link is : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/310049/hyperlinks-are-not-working-in-outlook . Try also these steps:

  1. Reset your IE settings.
  2. Get another registry key from another computer ( if possible ).

The link mentioned above gives the steps on how to do the solutions mentioned above. Hope that helps! Good luck!
