Hi Jerry,

I would suggest you start with PHP News Reader. It has many nice features you might want to experiment with like :

1. Read – Post articles from – to News Servers 

2. Support NNTP authentication 

3. It is quite simple to install

4. It can be adapted to work with existing systems.
