Apple released its mapping service in iOS on September 19, 2012 called Apple Maps replacing Google Maps as their default mapping service for the Apple operating system. Apple Maps is a web mapping service similar to Google Maps developed by Apple Inc. It will now be the default mapping system for watchOS, OS X, and iOS.
This new mapping service offers directions and ETAs or estimated time of arrivals for pedestrian, automobile, and public transportation navigation. It will also feature the unique “Flyovers” mode. The mode allows a user to explore or discover densely populated urban centers in a 3D landscape consist of models of building and structures.
During its initial launch, the service received huge amounts of criticism from newspapers and users for wrong directions, doesn’t have support for public transportation users, and different errors and bugs. Many of these problems have been addressed in later software development. The initial release for Apple Maps was announced on June 11, 2012 during the WWDC or the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference.
Apple Maps will be available in iOS 6 and later. Apple also said that iPhone users would be able to navigate Apple Maps even in the locked screen.
