Hello. I would just like to ask about my headphone jack in my new ThinkPad Edge E520. It has only one jack which is very unusual to me. I usually notice two jacks in most devices like this, one for the microphone and one for the earpiece I suppose. What I have in my mind is that maybe this jack has a dual function for both microphone and earphone. But I am having a 2-jack headset here. Can I still use this? Will it damage my device if I try plugging it there? I think I can use wireless headset but I prefer to use the wired one. Or is there some sort of adapter I could use? I don’t want to try plugging my headset because I’m afraid it could damage the jack. Any suggestions?
Headphone has only one jack
There would be a microphone in your ThinkPad see the system and i am sure that you will find one in your laptop. You can then configure if as per your requirements.
These microphones are available in most computers over the keyboard. You need to see around the ESC key and you will see two whole like things in that these are the microphones on your laptop. You can take a test of your microphone and then you will be able to check it. You need to go to voice settings but also check the drivers and make sure you have proper drivers. then perform the record task and i hope you will be able to record your voice.

Headphone has only one jack
Nowadays, you will find that some computers use a single jack. These are just "smart jacks", and they have been introduced because apparently firmware is cheaper than hardware and, you will find that using two jacks cost more than one jack, and the important thing that the headphone delivers quality service
In either cases, where there two jacks or just one jack, you will find that the headphones will the same way. The computer will just look at the impedance of the device that has been plugged in, and determine if it is a mono earpiece meaning it has one jack or stereo piece meaning it has two jacks and then deliver the best functionality accordingly.
