Help in deciding which drivers are safe to install

When I connected a new hardware device to my computer, Windows tried to find and installed a software driver for the device. Unfortunately, I haven't seen a notification that a driver is unsigned, has been altered since it was signed, or can't be installed by Windows. How can I decide which drivers are safe to install?

  • Do remember that when you attach a new device to your PC, Windows attempts to find & install a software driver. Sometimes, you might grasp a statement that a driver is unsigned, it has been changed as it was signed or Windows cannot be installed it. PC will ask you about what you like to do.
  • What is a signed driver? It is a device driver that contains a digital signature which is an electronic security mark that can specify the publisher. Same with someone has altered with the driver as it was signed. But if a driver has been verified & it has a signed by a publisher, you are worry free and confident because your driver originates from that genuine publisher and has not been altered.
  • And last, Windows will aware you by messages if a driver are unsigned, it was signed by means of a publisher that has not confirmed its identity thru a certification authority. It’s very clear that has been altered as it was released.

Hi, that is an easy question to solve. In order to be able to know the type of driver that is best to install, you need to know the manufacturer of the driver and whether the computer allows the driver to install without any security issues. You also need to visit the manufacturer's website to fully ensure that the drivers are safe to install. You can also use the add or remove programs option to update or install your drivers since this will also detect the best drivers for your system.

Device manager is also best for knowing the kind of drivers to install on your system. Hope this helps, thanks

You cannot decide on that factor when installing drivers on the computer. The fact whether a driver is signed or unsigned is determined by the operating system. The reason why Microsoft wants that you install only signed drivers is to avoid problems or complications in the operation of the device you installed.

When the driver is signed, this certifies that the driver software is fully compatible with the operating system. If a driver is unsigned and you install it, Windows will prompt you that you are installing an unsigned driver and inform you of the risk when installing unsigned drivers. You can actually ignore this warning and click “Continue anyway” on the dialog.

Windows will continue to install the driver even if it is not signed. There is actually no problem as long as you know the driver is safe and compatible with your computer. Whether you are installing a signed or unsigned driver, always make sure that the driver came from a trusted website. On the other hand, always download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.
