How can i set up and use a virtual switch in linux

Hi guys, im new in virtual switches and was in dire need of some assistance I have been using virtual ports using tun/tap adapter then heard of a virtual switch, how can i set up one in my Linux machine (Ubuntu 14.04), configure and use it rather than buying a whole new switch.
