How to convert avi into GIF on Mac despite large file size

I spent long time searching for a software that converts avi into gif on mac OS, I found few but always find problems converting due to large file size, I don't want to convert the entire video into a gif file, a few shots will suffice but I'm still unable to find the proper software and the technique to do so, is there a good one that can handle 300 megabyte movie?

There is an online application which lets you convert your .Avi to .GIF online, the website owner and the title is called a Zamzar online converter.
