You forgot to mention which operating system you are using. The steps I will provide is for Windows 7. Maybe you can get an idea on customizing your Start menu button.

1. Right-click on your Start button and then click Properties.

2. Click the Customize button.

3. To customize the Start menu, tick or untick your desired settings on how you would want your Start Menu to look like.

4. When done with the changes, click the OK button.

There is also a different way of customizing your operating system’s Start button by using or applying Windows XP themes or skins. This not only changes the appearance of the Start button but revives the whole desktop with a different look as well different from what you usually see.

Since downloading and applying Windows themes mean purchasing it from Microsoft because they don’t allow anything free for users and wants everything for profit, there is a way of changing the skin your Microsoft Windows XP uses without purchasing it from Microsoft.

To select and download different themes for your Windows XP, visit FREE Visual Styles – XP Themes – Free Skins. The site offers loads of free skins to choose. To download a theme or skin, click on the thumbnail of the theme or simply click on the link “More Information” opposite to it then click “Download” on the next page. Additionally, before or even after downloading your desired themes, be sure to click on “How to Install Themes” found on the download page. This gives you the instruction on how to properly install it on your computer.

Depending on the Service Pack your Windows XP uses, you may need to download the patch separately. You can already download the patch from the site which already supports Windows XP Service Packs 1 and 2 but for Service Pack 3, you need to download it from somewhere else.
