Recently my external hard drive (western digital 500GB) while in use through my HP laptop was attacked by a unknown virus rendering it completely useless. All data was converted to dot file and i was unable to recover any files. Can a virus be detected immediately?
How do i know if my computer has a virus?
Some virus is camouflaged meaning they can be encrypt and pack in malicious software’s which will make them undetectable to any virus software. Detecting this kind of virus needs a powerful unpacking engine that can decrypt the file before examining. But most of the popular antivirus doesn’t have it, which results to undetected virus.
So it goes back to users initiative to be careful, she/he should not download and execute unknown programs from the internet. In this action you can at least prevent a little for the safety of your gadget to be infected with virus.
Computer users should not run the administrator access to their own machine. User mode is more likely a good thing to use to slow the spread of the virus. They say that companies that sell antivirus seem to have a financial incentive for virus to be written and spread out. What a business don’t you think?

Well reading your post definitely induced a sense of fear in me. Such a virus that rendered a hard disk useless won't be a simple one. It will be complex enough to bypass computer anti-virus that we commonly use with our systems. You should consult with some computer expert and maybe he can help you wash your hard disk.
All the best
