I need a security expert to help me understand how to encrypt email. Could you explain some steps I can take to ensure that my emails remain confidential whenever I send them? How can I know that someone will not snoop on the email whiles it is in transit to its destination? Is there a way to detect compromised emails?
How Do You Encrypt Email to Ensure Information Stays Confidential?
There is a simple way how to encrypt all outgoing messages:
-
On the Tools menu, click Trust Center, and then open E-mail Security.
-
Under Encrypted e-mail, select the Encrypt contents and attachments for outgoing messages check box.
-
To change additional settings, such as choosing a specific certificate to use, click Settings.
-
Click OK twice.
How Do You Encrypt Email to Ensure Information Stays Confidential?
That’s right. That’s how you encrypt all your email messages if you are using an email client such as Microsoft Office Outlook. For users with Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Enterprise edition, here is how to do it. Start Microsoft Office Outlook then click Tools and then select Trust Center. See image.
In Trust Center, select E-mail Security. In “Encrypted e-mail” section, check “Encrypt contents and attachments for outgoing messages”. Optionally, you can check “Add digital signature to outgoing messages”. Click OK. See image.
Additionally, adding a digital signature to your email message is a good idea because it will add security to the message. When you add a digital signature, the sender information and the contents of the email message cannot be modified along the way. In case you are not using an email client such as Microsoft Office Outlook or you are using web mail and encrypting the message is not available, adding a digital signature is your best alternative in protecting your message.
This way, you are sure that your message is protected from getting modified in case someone has intercepted the message.
