How to get a second montior to be recognized

I've recently started a new job and I need a second monitor.  I have everything set up, but I cannot get my screen to show on both monitors.  I need to view Word on one monitor and Excel on the other.  Can anyone assist with the steps so I can not only use this function, but get it to appear this way whenever I boot up?  Thank you.

How to get a second montior to be recognized

 

To add a second monitor to your computer,you'll need to make sure that your video card that supports multiple monitors.And you see if your card has two video ports for connecting your monitors, VGA port and DVI port.However, now you turn off your computer and monitor.Then connect the second monitor to the unused video port,plug the second monitor and turn it on.Then turn on your original monitor and computer.windows should recognize the monitor once the computer has started.Now your problem is solved.
